Ezekiel Emanuel: “Collaboration is Key to the Future of Health Care”

Posted Thursday, May 4th, 2017

Programs & Events, Action Teams, Health Care

On April 26, Ezekiel J. Emanuel, M.D., Ph.D., delivered an insightful keynote presentation at Shaping Health Care: Understanding the Regional Impact of Changes to Health Care. There, Dr. Emanuel went over lessons learned from the Affordable Care Act he helped engineer, including details on health spending costs, which have slowed, and readmission numbers, which have dropped.

Dr. Emanuel is optimistic — he believes that the United States of America can offer the best quality of health care in the world by the year 2030 if health systems focus on the following twelve practices:

  1. Scheduling
  2. Registration & rooming
  3. Shared decision-making
  4. Performance measurement
  5. Standardization
  6. Care management
  7. Site of service
  8. De-institutionalization
  9. Behavioral health management
  10. Hospice
  11. Community interventions
  12. Lifestyle interventions

He emphasized that utilizing all practices isn’t necessary, but implementing some will go a long way. The good news? Philadelphia is already leading in this area.

Key among these practices is the importance of collaboration, which Dr. Emanuel and our panel of experts repeatedly emphasized.

Collaboration was a hot topic not just during the program, but afterwards when members of our Health Care Action Team convened to discuss the region’s health care assets. A unique, cross-functional group of leaders, the Health Care Action Team focuses on transforming our 11-county community into the global leader in health care innovation.

Examples discussed of innovative collaborations unique to the Philadelphia region were:

Digital Health Initiative of Philadelphia
Health Care Innovation Collaborative
Healthy Company Consortium
Independence Blue Cross and University of Pennsylvania Health System agreement
North Philadelphia Health Enterprise Zone
Philadelphia Research Consortium
